The Atlantic City Surf began play in 1998 as one of the independent Atlantic League's original teams. They captured the league championship in their inaugural season under the direction of President & GM Ken Shepard. After the 2006 season, they switched to the Canadian-American Association, where they played for two seasons. The team's owners tried to sell the franchise after the 2008 season, but failed to find a buyer, bringing the league to decide to disband the team. The Surf played its home games at Bernie Robbins Stadium, formerly Sandcastle Stadium in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
