He got his one and only save in his very first major league game on September 10, 1980 as a 20-year-old rookie with the Milwaukee Brewers against the Minnesota Twins. He pitched a two-hitter on September 27, 1987 as a member of the Chicago White Sox against the Oakland Athletics. The only two hits were a single by Terry Steinbach and a double by Mike Gallego. He walked 2 and struck out one in the game. The White Sox won the game, 5-0.

LaPoint was the manager of the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League from 2007 to 2008 and again in 2010. From 2002 through 2005, he lined Ducks up in a row as the franchise's pitching coach.
