Evangeline League

From BR Bullpen

The Evangeline League began in 1934 as a 6-team class D league in and around Louisiana. Its name comes from the Acadian legendary heroine Evangéline, made famous through a poem of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The league quickly expanded to 8 teams and lasted till World War II, when it shut down from 1943 to 1945. It resumed operation in 1946 and lasted through 1957, getting promoted to class C in 1949. Right before the second half began in 1957, two of the six remaining teams dropped out, shrinking the league to a non-viable four teams. No champion was declared in that final season, which is recalled more for Bob Riesener's 20-0 campaign. Alexandria, LA competed in all 21 seasons of competition, while New Iberia, LA missed only the last season.

In 1948, Roy "Tex" Sanner won the batting triple crown with .386, 34, 126 and almost won the pitching triple crown as well (21-2, 251 SO and 2.58 ERA). He missed by 1 W, 8 SO, and 0.21 ERA.
