Biographical Information

Liz Funk, born Elias Calvin Funk in Kansas in 1904, was at the University of Oklahoma during the years 1923-28. A centerfielder by trade, he got into one game with the 1929 New York Yankees in April, spending most of the season in the Pacific Coast League, and then became a regular with the 1930 Detroit Tigers. He was in the minors in 1931, and in early 1932 Louisville of the American Association traded him to the 1932 Chicago White Sox, where he became the regular centerfielder on a team that lost 102 games. In 1933 the White Sox kept manager Lew Fonseca but changed numerous players, including the entire outfield. Funk played his last major league game in May 1933.

He was the first of three players with the last name "Funk" to play in the majors.
