Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Thomas toiled in the minor leagues from 1924 to 1952. Although he missed 1930 and was suspended from one-and-a-half seasons, Thomas set minor league career records for:
- Games Pitched 1016
- Wins 383
- Losses 347
- Innings 5995
- Hits 6721
- Runs 3098
On January 25, 1947, Thomas was one of five Evangeline Leaguers (D) who were made ineligible to play for allegedly betting on 1946 playoff games. Two of his Houma Indian teammates and the manager are among the banned. Thomas would protest, pointing out that he was 5-0 in the playoffs. On August 25, 1949, he and Len Pecou are reinstated. In 1950, Thomas will win 26 games for Evangeline League and Rio Grande Valley League teams.
In 1946, the year of the alleged gambling, Thomas went 35-7, with a 2.88 ERA, while leading the league in G (47) and IP (353). His 35 wins also led the league.
