Biographical Information[edit]

Texas native Garth Mann spent twelve active seasons in professional baseball from 1937 to 1949. Garth spent one day in the Major Leagues with the Chicago Cubs on May 14, 1944. The pitcher appeared in one game as a pinch-runner and this was his only activity in the big leagues.

Mann had seven double-digit winning seasons during his twelve years in the minor leagues. In 1938, he led the Evangeline League in ERA (2.09) while with the Rayne Rice Birds his record was 14-7. He had another big season two years later, with the Pensacola Pilots of the class B Southeastern League, when he won 20 and lost 8 with a 3.04 ERA, pitching 222 innings in 33 games. He tied Frank Papish for second in the league in wins. In 1945 with the Oakland Oaks of the AA (then the highest classification in the minor leagues) Pacific Coast League, Garth went 15-9 with a 2.88 ERA, again in 222 innings in 33 games.

Garth finished out his minor league career in 1949 with a 125-96 record with a 3.44 ERA, pitching 2,009 innings in 335 games.

Garth owned and operated Associated Aircraft Supply Company with his two brothers in Dallas, TX, retiring to Italy, TX about 1965. In Italy, he owned the Black Meadow Farm where he raised thoroughbred horses. Ben Garth Mann died on September 11, 1980. He was 64 years of age.
