Biographical Information[edit]
Walter Morris was the first major league player to come out of the University of Texas at Austin. He was there in 1900. He played 23 games at shortstop for the 1908 St. Louis Cardinals, a team that lost 105 games. Patsy O'Rourke, who played the most games at shortstop that year for the team, also was a single-year player who never again played in the major leagues. O'Rourke hit .195, Morris hit .178, another shortstop Chappy Charles hit .205, and yet another shortstop Tom Reilly hit .173.
Morris helped to organize thirteen minor leagues and served as president for six of them, the Texas League from 1916 to 1920, the West Texas League in 1920-1921, the West Dixie League in 1935, the Cotton States League in 1936-1938, the Evangeline League in 1936-1937, the East Texas League in 1936-1937, and the Big State League from 1947 to 1950.
