1983 All-Star Game
The 1983 All-Star Game was played on Wednesday, July 6, 1983. The American League won the fifty-fourth midsummer classic by a score of 13 to 3. The game was played at Comiskey Park in Chicago, IL in front of 43,801 fans. The MVP was Fred Lynn of the California Angels. The game marked the fiftieth anniversary of the midsummer classic; the first All-Star Game had also been played in Comiskey Park, back in 1933.
Carl Yastrzemski and Johnny Bench were added to their respective teams at the request of Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, as both future Hall of Famers had announced that they would retire at the end of the season.
Fred Lynn hit the first grand slam in All-Star Game annals, connecting off Atlee Hammaker in the 3rd inning. Hammaker's 7 runs allowed in an inning set an All-Star Game record which still stands.
