Final Man Vote
The All-Star Final Man Vote was a short-term run-off ballot to designate the final member of the two leagues' teams at the annual All-Star Game. The vote pitted five candidates in each league who had not been selected by either the regular fan ballot, the player vote, or the the two All-Star Game managers. The voting took place over a handful of days and was conducted entirely online, unlike the regular fan vote, which included both paper ballots and on-line voting.
The Final Man Vote was introduced before the 2002 All-Star Game. Most of the winners were first-time All-Stars, and often players who had been good performers but not front-line stars. The purpose of the vote was to create some enthusiasm for the All-Star Game in the period between the announcement of initial rosters, and the start of All-Star festivities. It was discontinued in 2019, when MLB introduced a similar contest, a run-off ballot to select the actual starters for the game from among the top three finishers at each position.
