Biographical Information

Casey McGehee was born on the day (October 12, 1982) when the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-0, in their first World Series game ever. McGehee had hits in nine straight at-bats on August 10-12, 2010, setting a Brewers franchise record.

McGehee played in Japan in 2013 and returned to the majors with the Miami Marlins a completely different hitter in 2014. Whereas he had been a typical pull hitter with power but struggling with low batting averages before moving across the Pacific, he returned as a contact hitter, spraying balls all over the field, but with little power. He played 160 games and collected 177 hits, finishing with a .287 average and 76 RBIs although he connected for only 4 homers. He was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year. On December 19th, however, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants in return for minor league pitchers Kendry Flores and Luis Castillo, with the Giants planning on him to replace Pablo Sandoval as their regular third baseman.

He was the Giants starter at third base at the beginning of the 2015 season, but lost the job as he hit only .213 with 2 homers and 11 RBIs in 49 games. Matt Duffy took over at the hot corner for the defending World Series champions and on July 8th, he was given his release. A week later, he returned to the Marlins, signing on as a free agent. In 60 games he hit .182 with no homers and 9 RBIs and was released again at the end of the year. He was signed by the Detroit Tigers for 2016, but strictly as insurance. He spent the first four months of the year in the minors, except for a single appearance with Detroit on June 18th, when he made an out as a pinch-hitter. However, he kept himself in the picture by hitting very well for the Toledo Mud Hens, with a .322 average and 37 doubles in 109 games. This, when 3B Nick Castellanos broke his hand on August 6th, the Tigers did not have to go outside the organization for a replacement, calling up Casey instead. In 30 games, he hit .228 with no homers and only 1 RBI. After the season, he decided to return to Japan, signing a one-year deal with the Yomiuri Giants.

McGehee became head coach of Union University for 2023.
