Season Highlights[edit]
The 2013 San Francisco Giants were defending World Series champions and favorites to repeat as NL West division winners, but things did not go as planned. After a correct start, they began to lose consistently starting in mid-May, outpacing even clearly undermanned squads such as the Houston Astros and Miami Marlins. When they lost a game to the New York Mets, 7-2, on July 10th, they completed their worst homestand in three years and fell to 10 games below .500. That same day, reports emerged that P Chad Gaudin had been charged with gross lewdness for an off-season incident at a Las Vegas, NV hospital, one more negative in a season that had been full of them. Among the main causes of the team's problems were poor performances by pitching aces Matt Cain and Ryan Vogelsong, and generalized mediocre production from the offense. Only the team's three All-Stars - P Madison Bumgarner, C Buster Posey and 2B Marco Scutaro - were performing at a level near what was expected. The low point probably came on July 2nd, when the Giants were no-hit by Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds; however, 11 days later, Tim Lincecum gave fans hope that the second half would be better when he tossed a no-no of his own, beating the San Diego Padres, 9-0, on July 13th.
