History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1892 Giants finished under .500 in eighth place, but had an unusual mix of players.
Among youngsters, Hall of Famer Willie Keeler was a 20-year-old rookie on the team, and Hall of Famer Amos Rusie was a 21-year-old veteran already in his fourth year (he went 31-31). Dirty Jack Doyle was a 22-year-old veteran also in his fourth year, and he hit well.
Among oldsters, Hall of Famer Jim O'Rourke at age 41 was still a regular and had one of the highest batting averages on the team. 37-year-old Hardy Richardson and 35-year-old George Gore both got some playing time in their last major league seasons - Gore had a .412 on-base percentage, the highest on the team. Hall of Famer Mickey Welch, slightly younger at age 32, was also in his last season in the majors.
Meanwhile, Hall of Famer Buck Ewing, at age 32, was the best hitter of the regulars and would continue to play for five more seasons. 25-year-old Mike Tiernan, quite possibly the best hitter in the league in 1890-91, fell off a bit in 1892 but was still above average.
