The 1963 San Francisco Giants started out hot, going 30-18 in April and May. They led the National League as late as late June and were in the pennant race until mid-August, but they played .500 ball in August and September and finished in third place, 11 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. On the mound, they were led by Juan Marichal, who went 25-8 with a 2.41 ERA but lost the Cy Young Award to Sandy Koufax. Marichal was joined on the All-Star team by catcher Ed Bailey, first baseman Orlando Cepeda, and outfielders Willie McCovey and Willie Mays. All except for Bailey are in the Hall of Fame.

In the 8th inning of the September 10th game against the New York Mets, the three Alou brothers (Jesus, Matty, and Felipe) came to the plate for the Giants. It is the only time in baseball history that three brothers have batted in the same inning.
