Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Ron Wotus played 11 seasons in the minors in the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, and San Francisco Giants organizations and had a cup of coffee in the majors with the Pirates in 1983 and 1984.

After retiring as a player, he coached the Clinton Giants in 1990 and managed from 1991 to 1997 in the Giants system and was named Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year while with the Phoenix Firebirds in 1997. The next season, 1998, he moved up to the big leagues as a Giants coach, a position he still held as of 2020, having been both bench coach and third base coach over the years, a period which coincided with the Giants winning the World Series three times. He left following the 2021 season. He then became a special assistant in the Giants' baseball operations department.

Wotus, as of 2011, is the only player in Major League history with a last name that starts with "Wot". There are currently no players in the minor leagues that have a chance of "threatening" this title any time soon.
