Biographical Information[edit]

Mark Gardner was 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA for US for the 1984 Amateur World Series, walking 11 in 18 innings for the Bronze Medal winners. He was signed as an 8th round pick in the 1985 amateur draft by the Montreal Expos and scout Loyd Christopher.

He threw a quasi no-hitter on July 26, 1991 for the Montreal Expos against the Los Angeles Dodgers; he pitched 9 innings without allowing a hit or a run, becoming the first pitcher to hold the Dodgers hitless through 9 innings at Dodger Stadium. Unfortunately, his teammates failed to score any runs for him as they were limited to two hits by Orel Hershiser, Kevin Gross and Jay Howell. In the bottom of the 10th, he gave up an infield single to Lenny Harris to break up the no-hitter, then Eddie Murray followed with another single. Jeff Fassero relieved him, but he gave up a single to Darryl Strawberry that won the game for Los Angeles. All Gardner had to show for his great start was a 1-0 loss. Two days later, teammate Dennis Martinez tossed a perfect game against the Dodgers. Until 1990, Gardner's game would have been considered a no-hitter, but the rules were changed after the season to exclude games in which the pitcher(s) did not pitch 9 full innings or allowed a hit in extra innings.

From 2003 to 2017, Gardner was the San Francisco Giants bullpen coach, being in the job for three World Series titles during that span. He was dismissed following a last-place finish in 2017, alongside pitching coach Dave Righetti.
