Season Summary[edit]

The 2011 Philadelphia Phillies' were probably the strongest edition in team history. They headed into the season with one of the strongest starting rotations ever assembled, featuring Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Roy Oswalt and Joe Blanton. When Blanton went down for the season with an injury in May, his replacement, Vance Worley, became one of the top rookies in the majors. The Phillies had a 1.96 staff ERA in June, the first month under 2.00 by any major league staff since the 1992 Cubs and 1992 Braves. Halladay, Lee and Hamels were all named to the All-Star team.

On September 2nd, the Phillies moved to 42 games above .500 (88-46) with a 5-3 win over the Florida Marlins. The 1976 Phillies had been 41 games above .500 twice during their season, but no Philly team had ever reached that many. They had 5 more wins than any other major league team at that point of the season and finished with the best record in the majors and the most wins in franchise history. Yet, for all that, they were upset in the NLDS by the St. Louis Cardinals, 3 games to 2.
