Biographical Information[edit]
Placido Polanco was an excellent fielder, contact hitter and free swinger who had a high career batting average despite a fairly average on-base percentage. On October 14, 2006, Polanco was named MVP of the 2006 ALCS after the Detroit Tigers swept the Oakland A's. His batting average for the ALCS was .529, he had 9 hits and knocked in 2 runs.
On August 13, 2007, Polanco broke Luis Castillo's record of 144 consecutive error-free games at second base; the two streaks had overlapped for the most part as Castillo's had gone from May 2006 to June 2007 and Polanco's from July 2006 to August 2007. Polanco's streak reached 911 chances and 186 games before he had a throwing error on April 8, 2008. He also held the single-season record, with 141 errorless games in 2007; that mark was tied by Darwin Barney in 2012.
Polanco's excellence in fielding was evident by reputation and statistics. Besides the three Gold Gloves he won, two at second base and one at third base, Polanco also holds the major league record for highest career fielding percentage at both positions. He became eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2019, but received just 2 votes to drop off the ballot.
