History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 2009 Detroit Tigers led the AL Central division race for most of the season, only to lose an extra-inning one-game playoff to the Minnesota Twins on October 5 after the two teams finished tied for first after 162 games. Detroit's collapse was quite accute, as they led the Twins by 7 games on September 7, and were 3 games ahead with 4 left to play before letting Minnesota catch up. They had taken an early lead in the playoff game, played in Minnesota, on a home run by Miguel Cabrera, but again let the Twins come back, then blew a chance to take another lead in the 12th inning when Cabrera was thrown out at home, and ended up losing 6-5 in 12 innings. Following the 2010 season, a panel of experts at the MLB Network voted this playoff game the 16th greatest game of the past fifty years.
