Biographical Information[edit]

Gene Lamont has been a major league player, coach and manager. The Chicago White Sox teams which he managed in 1993 and 1994 won their division.

He was the first-round selection of the Detroit Tigers in the 1965 amateur draft and went on to play five seasons in the majors and 12 in the minors, primarily as a catcher.

Most of his major league at-bats came with the Tigers in 1974 under manager Ralph Houk. Gene was one of three players who all appeared many times at catcher - Jerry Moses was in 74 games at the position, Bill Freehan was in 63 games at catcher and 65 at first base, and Lamont was in 60 games at catcher. Moses was traded before the 1975 season, but Lamont got into only 4 games the next year with the Tigers, while Freehan was the regular catcher. Lamont hit .217 in 1974, but the whole team only averaged .247.

After several stints as a player with the Tigers, he went on to serve as a Pittsburgh Pirates coach under skipper Jim Leyland from 1986 to 1991.

After managing the Chicago White Sox from 1992 to 1995, he returned to the Pirates coaching staff in 1996. In 1997, he replaced Leyland as the team's skipper, a position he held through 2000.

Lamont spent 2001 as a Boston Red Sox coach and was a member of the Houston Astros coaching staff for the next three seasons, from 2002 to 2004. In 2005, he managed the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, and in 2006 he rejoined the Tigers as a third base coach where he was reunited with his mentor, Jim Leyland. He stayed as a coach in various capacities with the Tigers until the end of the 2017 season. In 2018, he joined the Kansas City Royals organization as a special assistant to General Manager Dayton Moore. He had earlier in his career served as a minor league manager for eight years in the Royals' organization.

His son, Wade Lamont, was selected by the Tigers in the 29th round of the 2007 amateur draft and played in their organization.
