1991 NPB All-Star Game

From BR Bullpen

There were two 1991 NPB All-Star Games. Both MVPs same team - first time; next 1995

Game 1[edit]

Game 1 was July 23 at the Tokyo Dome, with 44,011 in attendance. The Central League got a five-hit shutout from Hiromi Makihara (W), Tatsuji Nishimura, Genji Kaku and Kenjiro Kawasaki. It was the third year in a row that the first NPB All-Star Game was a shutout, as the Pacific League had turned the feat the prior two years. Hideo Nomo shut out the CL for two innings before Atsuya Furuta was driven in by Takahiro Ikeyama in the third for the game's lone run; Furuta was named Game MVP.

Game 2[edit]

The second game was a day later, at Hiroshima Municipal Baseball Stadium; 28,371 were present. The two teams battled to a 3-3 tie, with Hiromasa Arai leading the PL offense (HR, 2 H) and starter Katsuyoshi Murata turning in three shutout frames. For the CL, RF Katsumi Hirosawa came off the bench to go four-for-four with two of their three RBI to take game MVP - it was the first time a team had swept NPB All-Star Game honors (it would next happen in 1995). Koichi Morita led the CL staff with 2 1/3 shutout innings from the 9th through the 11th. The PL bench got so depleted that they had to use Nomo as a pinch-hitter and fellow hurler Kimiyasu Kudoh as a left fielder.
