Toshio Azuma was a minor league infielder in the Hanshin Tigers organization from 1979-1985. He then became a Central League umpire. He worked the Nippon Pro Baseball All-Star Game in 1991, 1994 and 2000. He worked the 1996 Japan Series, 1999 Japan Series, 2002 Japan Series, 2003 Japan Series, 2004 Japan Series, 2005 Japan Series, 2006 Japan Series, 2007 Japan Series, 2010 NPB All-Star Game, 2011 Japan Series, 2014 Japan Series and 2015 NPB All-Star Game. In 1996, he came to MLB spring training as part of a MLB-NPB umpire exchange program.
