Biographical Information[edit]

Motohara was selected by the Yomiuri Giants in the fourth round of the 1985 NPB draft, but he spent his first three seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues due to a right shoulder injury. The Giants traded him with Takeshi Yamada to the Daiei Hawks for 1 million yen in the middle of the 1990 season. Motohara was 5-5 with a 4.48 ERA for the Hawks in 1990. He was selected for the Pacific League team in the 1991 NPB All-Star Game, and he relieved Nobuyuki Hoshino in the 6th inning of Game 2. He pitched 1 1/3 innings with 2 runs allowed against the Central League. Motohara ended up 8-9 with a 4.78 ERA in 1991. He was 2-8 with a 4.86 ERA in 1992, then the Hawks turned him into a reliever in 1993; he had a 3.76 ERA in 17 relief outings. The Hawks released him, and the Hiroshima Carp picked him up. However, Motohara only played a single game for the Carp in 1994, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Motohara was 16-22 with a 4.19 ERA; he struck out 116 and pitched 318 1/3 innings in 5 years in NPB.
