The Tokyo Yakult Swallows were originally established as the Kokutetsu Swallows in 1950. The team later became the Sankei Atoms and Yakult Atoms before reclaiming the Swallows moniker in 1973. After decades of failure, the team was one of the most successful Central League franchises of the 1990s. The team added Tokyo to their name before the 2006 season.
