The Orix Buffaloes were formed in 2005 by the merger of the Orix Blue Wave and Kintetsu Buffaloes, getting the players from the two worst teams in the 2004 Pacific League except for a couple Kintetsu players who refused to play for the merged franchise and instead opted for the expansion Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. The team won its first Japan Series in 2022. Pitching Triple Crown winner Yoshinobu Yamamoto led the way in the regular season, with Masataka Yoshida pacing the offense, but in the Series Yutaro Sugimoto won MVP for his clutch hits and the other pitchers picked up the slack after Yamamoto got hurt with fine work from Sachiya Yamasaki, Hiroya Miyagi and Jacob Waguespack providing key contributions on the hill.
