1983 NPB All-Star Game

From BR Bullpen

There were three 1983 NPB All-Star Games and the Pacific League swept the Central League. It was the first time that the PL used designated hitters in the All-Star Game.

Game 1[edit]

Game 1 took place July 23 at Meiji-Jingu Stadium, with an attendance of 31,827. Veteran Hiromitsu Kadota crushed 2 homers with 3 RBI to win MVP, while Terry Whitfield and Daijiro Oishi both homered in the 2nd inning. Starter Hirohisa Matsunuma completed 3 shutout innings with a strikeout to collect a win. The PL's Koji Yamamoto also blasted 2 homers, but his teammates couldn't drive in any runs so the CL lost the 2-run game.

Masayuki Matsunuma pitched 3 strikeouts in 2 innings to get the win while allowing 2 runs; he and his brother Hirohisa were the only pair to win back-to-back All-Star Games in NPB history. Masataka Nashida's clutch go-ahead RBI single earned him the MVP, and Hiromitsu Ochiai collected a homer. Red-hot Koji Yamamoto went deep again to tie it in the 8th inning while drawing 2 walks, but his teammates didn't support him again.
