Biographical Information[edit]

Noboru Makino pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 13 years.

Makino was signed by the Toei Flyers in 1956, and he was 3-11 with a 4.66 ERA in his rookie year. He broke out in 1957, and he was 15-19 with a 2.09 ERA. He led the Pacific League in starts, walks, wild pitches and hit-by-pitches, ranking 9th in wins (tied with Atsushi Aramaki), 4th in losses (2 behind Masayoshi Miura), 7th in appearance (14 behind Kazuhisa Inao), 5th in ERA (between Takao Kajimoto and Hisafumi Kawamura) and 5th in strikeouts (between Shoichi Ono and Tadao Wako). He was also selected into the 1957 NPB All-Star Game, and he surrendered a run in 1 2/3 innings in Game 2.

The Fukui native was 4-8 with a 2.69 ERA in 1958, then he had a 3-7 record with a 3.87 ERA in 1959. His ERA rose to 5.48 in 11 games in 1960, so he only got 6 appearances in 1961. The Flyers then traded him to the Kintetsu Buffaloes. Makino pitched 43 games as a reliever with a 2.84 ERA in 1962, then he had a 3.94 ERA in 34 games in 1963. He then entered the rotation in 1964, and he was 8-14 with a 3.50 ERA. Makino had a 5-2 record with a 3.15 ERA in 1965, then he struggled in 1966 as his ERA was 6.65 in 23 games. He bounced back in 1967 while having a 2.41 ERA in 36 relief outings, but he only pitched one game in 1968 and he announced his retirement. He then became an umpire for the PL, and he worked for them from 1969 to 1994. He was a umpire for 4 All-Star Games (1979, 1983, 1989, 1992) and two Nippon Series. Osamu Kubota is the only other person to play and umpire in a NPB All-Star Game through 2023.

Overall, Makino was 45-76 with a 3.25 ERA, struck out 485 and pitched 1,097 2/3 innings in 13 years in NPB.
