2017 World Port Tournament

The 2017 World Port Tournament was held from July 1 through July 9, 2017 in Rotterdam. Competing teams were the Dutch national team, Cuba, a Japanese team, a team from Taiwan and a team from Curacao.

Cuba finished last for the first time ever, going 3-4 as they dropped their last four games, including the three games in the placement round. Playing well were Yoelkis Guibert (.423/.423/.500). Frank Camilo Morejón (.412/.565/.471), Yoalkis Cruz (1-0, 0.52) and Yoandri Ruiz (1-0, 1.17).

Curacao was 1-5 but avoided last by beating Cuba in the second round. Their best player was Shurendell Mujica (.429/.556/.619, 5 RBI).

Japan was 5-3, losing the finale to Taiwan, 3-2. Ryosuke Fujii (Sv, 0 R in 11 IP) and Daisuke Yamagami (2-0, 0.60) were dominant hurlers while Takuya Okura (.448/.515/.483, 9 RBI in 7 G) and Masaki Otani (.379/.438/.552) paced the offense.

The host Netherlands was a disappointing 3-3 and 4th place. They did have the MVP in Dwayne Kemp (.421/.500/.474, 6 RBI in 6 G). Diegomar Markwell (0.00 in 10 1/3 IP) and Kevin Heijstek (1 UER in 7 IP) both pitched well but did not get decisions.

Taiwan won their second title, having also won in 2011. After a 1-3 start, they won their final four games, topping the Netherlands and Japan (twice) in the second round to take it all. Yi-Hung Chen hit .368/.500/.526 as their top offensive performer. Hsin-Chuan Wang drove in all three runs in the 10-inning finale while Cheng-Hao Wang got the win (1 R in 3 1/3 IP).
