Vladimir Hernández pitched for 16 seasons in the Cuban Serie Nacional. The right-hander was 11-2 for Villa Clara in 2001-2002, leading the league in winning percentage. He was the losing pitcher in the Cuban All-Star Game that year, though. In the 2003 World Port Tournament, he won Best Pitcher honors after tying for the win lead (2, even with Rob Cordemans, Ying-Feng Tsai and Patrick Beljaards, saving a game, finishing second with 16 whiffs (behind Che-Yi Su), finishing 4th in WHIP (between Patrick De Lange and Beljaards) and winning the championship game over the host Dutch national team, 3-2. He also was on the Cuban squad that won the 2003 Pan American Games. For his Cuban career, Vladimir was 72-41 with a 3.62 ERA in 321 games (78 starts). In 965 2/3 IP, he allowed 314 walks, struck out 604 and gave up a .271 average.
He became manager of Villa Clara for 2015-2016, going 22-23. They went 52-38 in 2016-2017, making it to the second round that time, but fell back to 23-22 in 2017-2018, his last season. Eduardo Paret replaced him as manager.
