Biographical Information[edit]

Max Clarijs has played in the Hoofdklasse.

Clarijs was 2 for 6 with 3 walks for the Netherlands in the 2012 World Junior Championship. He backed up Milan Post at catcher. [1] He debuted in the 2013 Hoofdklasse; the 18-year-old hit .138/.261/.155 for HCAW as their regular backstop; opponents stole 53 bases in 65 tries. [2] He batted .136/.239/.173 in 2014 and handling 160 chances error-free, throwing out 42.9% of attempted base-runners. Only Mark Duursma had more chances with a 100% fielding percentage. Only Joris van Ballegooy caught more runners. [3] He was 1 for 5 in the 2014 U-21 Baseball World Cup, backing up Aldair Adamus. [4]

In 2015, he hit .154/.287/.165, throwing out 33.3% and tying Dashenko Ricardo for the most runners thrown out (16). [5] He moved to the Amsterdam Pirates in 2016, replacing Bas Nooij as their backstop. His offense picked up big-time (.260/.322/.325) while he was 3 for 18 with two walks, two runs and a RBI in the 2016 Holland Series. [6] He was with Amsterdam when they won the 2016 European Champions Cup. [7]

Clarijs was 2 for 9 in the 2017 European Champions Cup but with four walks, a homer off Raúl Rivero and four runs for a .429 OBP and .556 SLG; only Remco Draijer had a better OPS for Amsterdam. [8] He played for the Netherlands in the 2017 World Port Tournament, going 0 for 4 as the backup to Gianison Boekhoudt. [9] In the 2017 Hoofdklasse, he hit .173/.281/.213 and throwing out 38.5%. [10] In the 2017 Holland Series, he was 1 for 13, doubling off Orlando Yntema as Amsterdam again lost to Neptunus. [11]

The catcher was 2 for 12 with 3 walks and a run in the 2018 European Champions Cup. [12] Back with the Dutch team for the 2018 Haarlem Baseball Week, he was 3 for 14 with two walks and a run as their starter, handling 39 chances error-free and catching 2 of 5 runners. [13] In the 2018 Hoofdklasse, he was at .266/.373/.396 with 28 RBI and 23 walks in 39 games, his best offensive campaign yet. He also fielded .996 and gunned down 55.6%. [14] During the 2018 Holland Series, he hit .217/.217/.261. [15]

He was only 1 for 9 with a walk and a run in the 2019 European Champions Cup. [16] He hit .179/.319/.277 in 2019, going 10-for-10 in steal attempts. He was only 10th in steals allowed (23) while tying Rodney Daal and Jason Halman for 2nd in steals prevented (9 runners caught). [17] He came up big in the 2019 Holland Series at .368/.571/.526 with 8 walks and 4 runs in 7 games, though his defense was off (8 SB, 1 CS, 2 PB). Amsterdam upset Neptunus and he finished among the Series leaders in average (3rd, after Rashid Gerard and MVP Delano Selassa), slugging (2nd, .074 behind Gerard), OBP (1st, .093 ahead of Selassa), runs (tied Dudley Leonora for 3rd), hits (7, tied Boekhoudt for 7th), doubles (3, 1st) and walks (1st, double runners-up Sharlon Schoop and Roelie Henrique Jr.) [18]

In a COVID-19-shortened 2020 Hoofdklasse, he hit only .125/.345/.200 with 11 walks and 9 runs in 15 games. He only caught 2 of 20 base-runners. [19] He again dazzled in the postseason, going 4 for 6 with 4 walks, a double and two RBI as the top hitter in the 2020 Holland Series before it was cut short due to COVID-19 safety measures in the Netherlands. At the time, Amsterdam was up 2 games to 0, but neither team was declared the victor. [20]

When Amsterdam picked up former AA player Sicnarf Loopstok, Clarijs moved into a bench role in 2021. He was 8 for 40 with 8 walks, 3 doubles, 3 runs and 5 RBI in the regular season. [21] He was 0 for 4 in the 2021 Holland Series as Amsterdam won the title. [22]
