Biographical Information[edit]

Bas Nooij has played for the Dutch national team. His brother Koen Nooij has been a teammate in Amsterdam.

He broke into the Hoofdklasse in 2006 as the regular catcher for the Amsterdam Pirates. The teenager hit .232/.261/.268 and allowed 40 steals in 49 tries. Nooij came to the US in 2007 to attend junior college; at the same time, his playing time for Amsterdam would have been cut drastically as the Pirates picked up Sidney de Jong. He was just 5 for 28 with a double and a walk in 2007 and was 0 for 1 in 2008.

In 2008-2009, Nooij hit .286/.345/.388 for Hawai'i Pacific University. In the 2009 Hoofdklasse season, he went 2 for 14 with two walks backing up de Jong after returning from college. Nooij was then listed as one of five catchers under consideration for the Dutch national team in the 2009 Baseball World Cup but did not make the final cut. He hit .396 with 9 home runs his last season for Hawai'i Pacific. In the 2010 Haarlem Baseball Week, he went 3 for 11 with two walks, a double, two runs and 3 RBI as the backup to de Jong. He hit .237/.313/.458 as de Jong's backup in the 2010 Hoofdklasse season and did not play in the 2010 Holland Series (which Amsterdam lost to DOOR Neptunus in six games).

In the 2011 Hoofdklasse, Bas batted .288/.393/.432 with 26 RBI in 42 games, playing DH primarily while de Jong was still the main catcher. He tied Jaïr Roseburg and Dirimo Chavez for 8th in the league with 12 doubles and led the league with 9 times hit by pitch. He was 3 for 19 with two walks, two doubles, four runs and two RBI when Amsterdam topped the Vaessen Pioniers in the 2011 Holland Series. He went 8 for 24 with three doubles, two walks, three runs and eight RBI in seven games for Amsterdam in the 2011 European Cup. He and Shawn Zarraga backed up de Jong when the Netherlands won the 2011 Baseball World Cup; Nooij was 0 for 4 with two runs in the historic performance for a European team, perhaps the brightest point in Dutch baseball history to that point.

Nooij and de Jong switched roles in 2012, de Jong playing mostly DH in his final season and Nooij becoming the starting catcher for Amsterdam. He did well, hitting .296/.450/.429 with 25 runs and 25 RBI in 31 games. He was 5th in the circuit in OBP (between Bryan Engelhardt and Danny Rombley) and first in times hit by pitch (14). He was only 1 for 10 in the 2012 Haarlem Baseball Week as the backup to Rudy van Heydoorn. In the 2012 European Cup, he went 3 for 17 for Amsterdam, but with four walks, five hit-by-pitch, five runs, a double and a homer (taking Darwin Cubillan deep in the 8th to end a 4-4 tie with T&A San Marino). He was left off the Dutch roster for the 2012 European Championship in favor of van Heydoorn, Quintin de Cuba and Danny Arribas.

Nooij was back with the Netherlands, though, for the 2013 World Baseball Classic, after Spencer Kieboom missed out due to injury. Nooij and de Cuba backed up Dashenko Ricardo as the Netherlands made it to the final four. He and de Cuba each played in only game as Ricardo got the bulk of the work. In his lone contest, Bas replaced Ricardo in the 6th inning of a 16-4, 7-inning mercy rule rout by Japan. He popped up as a pinch-hitter against Tetsuya Utsumi, then struck out against Hideaki Wakui with two on and one out in the 7th.
