After the 2016 Hoofdklasse season ended, there were a couple major shake-ups. Evert-Jan 't Hoen was not retained as head coach of champion Neptunus despite winning four straight Holland Series, while Kinheim, who had played in the Hoofdklasse since 1989 and won championships in three of the past 11 seasons, dropped down a level to the Overgangsklasse after not being able to retain any of its players for 2017.
