Biographical Information[edit]

Gianison Boekhoudt played three seasons in the minor leagues. He then played in the Hoofdklasse, leading the league three times in walks, twice in homers and once in RBI through 2016.

Boekhoudt was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 26th round of the 2009 amateur draft. He was 0 for 5 with a walk for the 2010 GCL Nationals and spent most of the season with the independent Coastal Bend Thunder (.272/.371/.526, 6 HR, 21 R, 21 RBI, 10 PB in 36 G, 49 K in 114 AB). He hit .221/.394/.377 as a backup left fielder for the 2011 AZL Dodgers. Primarily a DH for the McAllen Thunder in 2012, he produced at a .251/.384/.311 clip with 55 walks in 77 games. He was second in the North American League in walks.

Gianison signed with the Hoofdklasse's DOOR Neptunus powerhouse for 2013 Hoofdklasse; he hit .288/.408/.441 with 38 runs, 36 RBI, 34 walks and 11 steals (in 12 tries) in 42 games while fielding .986 (primarily in the outfield). He was among the league leaders in runs (5th, between Phil Ortez and Vince Rooi), hits (47, tied for 10th with Ramiro Balentina and Remco Draijer), RBI (2nd, two behind Dwayne Kemp), homers (5, 2nd, one behind Bryan Engelhardt), total bases (72, tied for 6th with Shaldimar Daantji), walks (1st by one over Draijer), steals (tied for 7th), plate appearances (203, 1st), at-bats (163, tied for 4th with Danny Rombley) and strikeouts (43, 1st). Despite the high walk and total bases totals, he did not make the top 10 in either slugging or OBP.In the 2013 World Port Tournament, he was 4 for 13 with five walks for the Dutch national team. He tied Rombley and Kuo-Long Lo for the tournament lead in walks and led in OBP. He was 2 for 16 in the 2013 Holland Series but with five walks and three runs in four games as Neptunus won the title. He scored the winning run in the 10th inning of game 4, drawing a walk from Bayron Cornelissen and coming home on a double by Raily Legito. He tied Benjamin Dille and Legito for the Series lead in runs and led in walks.

In 2014, he hit .316/.448/.566 with 37 runs and 42 RBI in 39 games, drawing 34 walks while fielding .995, now at catcher mainly. He was second in slugging (.024 behind Bas de Jong), 4th in OBP (between Mike Duursma and Legito), tied Duursma for 4th in runs, tied de Jong and Rooi for the most RBI, tied for 8th with 9 doubles, tied Kenny Berkenbosch for second with 7 home runs (two behind Engelhardt), tied Berkenbosch for third in total bases (77) and tied Rooi for the most walks. In the 2014 European Cup, he produced at a .333/.435/.556 clip with five runs and five RBI in five games; he hit a homer off Matthieu Brelle-Andrade. He was 8th in slugging, tied Philipp Howard and Ludwig Glaser for 7th in runs and tied for 6th in RBI. He again played a key role as Neptunus won a Holland Series, producing at a .370/.433/.481 clip with two runs and three RBI in seven games in the 2014 Holland Series. He led the event in total bases (13), slugging (.019 ahead of Kemp), tied Berkenbosch for the most doubles (3) and was third in average (behind Draijer and Dille), OBP (behind Draijer and Roelie Henrique) and hits (10, one behind Draijer and Dille). Berry van Driel took the Series MVP award.

He was the DH for the Netherlands in the 2014 European Championship as Dashenko Ricardo and Shawn Zarraga handled the catching. He did a lot to help the Netherlands win the Gold Medal, hitting .385/.452/1.000 with 10 runs, 15 RBI and 5 homers in 7 games leading into the finale. He set the pace early with homers off Dejan Marin and Matija Sertić in the first two innings of the opener against Croatia and also homered against Greece's Angelos Argyropoulos, Spain's Borja Jones (part of a 4-run, 3-RBI game versus a team that came into the match 3-0) and France's Enrique Juma. Entering the finale (stats from the final day of action not counting to the tourney official leaderboard), he was tied for first in homers (with Jakub Sládek), led in RBI (one ahead of Hainley Statia, Curt Smith and Jesús Golindano), tied for 4th in runs (with four others), tied Oscar Angulo for 4th in slugging and was 4th with 26 total bases (between Smith and Randolph Oduber). He was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk in the Gold Medal game, hitting cleanup; Gilmer Lampe pinch-ran for him late in a 6-3 win over defending champion Italy. Smith won the Series MVP.

Playing for the European Stars in the Global Baseball Match against Samurai Japan in early 2015, he got into one game, pinch-hitting for Ricardo in the 9th of a 4-3 loss and striking out against Yuji Nishino. He hit .277/.420/.466 for Neptunus in the 2015 Hoofdklasse with 35 walks, 8 home runs and 42 RBI in 42 games. He was 8th in OBP (between Berkenbosch and Kemp), led in RBI (two ahead of Ricardo), tied Engelhardt for the home run lead after finishing second to him two straight years, was second in walks (6 behind Duursma) and was 7th with 69 total bases (between Berkenbosch and Draijer). He helped Neptunus to the 2015 European Cup title, hitting .421/.522/.632 with six runs and seven RBI in six games in the opening round. He led with 40 chances error-free, tied for the lead with one homer, tied Stijn van der Meer for second in RBI, tied Rien Vernooij for 4th in runs, was 5th in slugging (between van der Meer and Adam Hajtmar), tied Hajtmar for 9th in average, tied Riccardo Bertagnon for 5th in OBP, tied for third in total bases and tied for 4th in walks (4). In the finals, he struggled, going 1 for 11, his one hit being a three-run homer off Filippo Crepaldi though, but Neptunus still prevailed over Fortitudo Bologna.

He hit .182/.455/.273 with 11 walks, 6 runs and four RBI in seven games in the 2015 World Port Tournament as the Netherlands finished second to Cuba. He easily led the event in walks (five ahead of Kevin Moesquit and Osvaldo Vázquez). He also tied for 7th in runs and tied Quintin de Cuba for 9th in OBP. He hit .235/.458/.471 in the 2015 Holland Series to help Neptunus to another title. He led that event in walks as well (6) while tying Legito and Phil Ortez for second in RBI (5) and placing second to Dille in OBP (.022 shy). In the 2015 Premier 12, the Netherlands only used him as a pinch-hitter as Zarraga and Ricardo did the catching and Wladimir Balentien was the DH. He got two plate appearances, pinch-hitting both times for Sharlon Schoop. In the 9th inning of a 7-4 win over Taiwan, he hit a sacrifice fly off Po-Yu Lin. In a 6-5 loss to Cuba, he was retired by José García.

In the 2016 Hoofdklasse, he produced at a .299/.433/.476 rate with 37 RBI and 37 walks in 42 games for Neptunus. He moved primarily to first base as Ricardo had joined the team as a catcher. He was 6th in slugging (between Nick Urbanus and Christian Diaz), 8th in OBP (between Dennis Ribbens and Diaz), tied for 8th in hits (44), was second in RBI (2 behind Dudley Leonora), tied for third in doubles (11), led in home runs (5, one ahead of Urbanus and Moesquit), led in walks (one ahead of Duursma) and tied Moesquit for fifth in total bases (70). He helped the Netherlands win the 2016 Haarlem Baseball Week. He was dominant at the 2016 European Cup (.375/.500/.813, 2 HR, 8 RBI in four games in the first round). He led in home runs (2), taking Wes Roemer and Tom de Blok deep, led in RBI (two ahead of Danny Rombley and Rien Vernooij), tied for 4th in OBP and was second in slugging (.116 behind Urbanus). His bases-loaded walk from Filippo Crepaldi drove in Kemp with the winner against T&A San Marino. In the 7-6 3rd/4th place game loss to Fortitudo Bologna, he was 2 for 4 with a RBI. He hit .348/.423/.522 with three runs and four RBI in the 2016 Holland Series as Neptunus won their fourth straight Series. He tied Kemp for third in slugging, tied Ricardo for third in OBP, was third in OPS (behind Linoy Croes and Ricardo) and tied for second in RBI, one behind Kemp.

Boekhoudt hit .273/.485/.364 with ten walks and seven runs in the first seven games of the 2016 European Championship, playing DH as Ricardo and Chadwick Tromp did the catching and Smith handled first base. He tied Daniel Martinez for the most walks entering the finale and tied for 10th in runs. In the Gold Medal game, he hit cleanup and went 1 for 3 with a walk, double and run in a 3-2 win over Spain. He doubled off Leslie Nacar in the second on scored on a hit by Urbanus to open the scoring. He kept on rolling in the 2017 European Champions Cup, hitting .389/.500/.722 with 7 runs and 9 RBI in 5 games, playing error-free ball at catcher. He was was third in the round-robin phase in slugging (behind Gabriel Fromental and Alex Sambucci), tied Sambucci and Paolino Ambrosino for third in RBI, 5th in OBP, tied Max Boldt and Fromental for the most home runs and tied for second in total bases (12, two behind Robel Garcia). In the finale, he was 1 for 5, with a two-run single off Luca Panerati, as Neptunus won its second European Cup in three years. He was named Cup MVP for his effort.
