José García set Cuba's all-time save record.

García debuted for La Habana in 1998-1999. He tied Vladimir García for the save lead in 2006-2007 (he may have led in prior seasons). He became the first pitcher in the history of the Cuban Serie Nacional to top 100 saves, breaking Orestes González's save record in the process. In 2007-2008, he was 3-4 with 8 saves and a 3.38 ERA. Through that year, he was 42-48 with 113 saves and a 3.48 ERA in 10 seasons. He had fanned 649 in 614 2/3 innings but walked 424.

José became a setup man for Miguel Lahera in 2008-2009 when La Habana won the title; the veteran right-hander was 4-5 with four saves and a 2.52 ERA; he allowed a .190 average and struck out 53 in 50 innings.

He went 4-4 with 10 saves and a 3.80 ERA in 2009-2010. He tied for 5th in games pitched (34) and tied for sixth in saves.
