Enrique Juma has pitched in French Division I and for the French national team.
Juma, a Dominican-French player, debuted in France in 2006 with the Sénart Templiers, going 0-1 and allowing 7 runs (2 earned) in 7 innings. [1] He was 0-2 with a 5.27 ERA for the 2007 Templiers. He next surfaced in 2011 with the Lions de Savigny-sur-Orge, posting a 3.86 ERA and going 6 for 24 with a double at the plate. In 2012, he hit .303/.312/.408 for the Lions and was 1-1 with a save and a 7.04 ERA.
He moved to the Paris Université Club in 2013 and batted .322/.333/.475 while doing much better on the hill (9-4, 3.43). He was 7th in Division I (between Jonathan Mottay and James Murrey), 6th in IP (77 1/3 IP) and 2nd in wins (one behind Owen Ozanich). [2] He had another big season in '14 - .324/.351/.535, 20 R, 19 RBI in 18 G, 6 SB (2 CS); 3-2, 1.55. He tied for 3rd in the league in triples (4) and tied Thomas Langloys for 4th in ERA. [3]
Enrique made the French squad for the 2014 European Championship. He pitched twice. In his first game, he relieved Leonel Cespedes in the 8th with a 8-2 lead over Sweden. He got Peter Johannessen on a fly but walked Philip Gajzler and hit Nico Filice. Juma whiffed Magnus Pilegård but then hit Björn Johannessen to load the bases. A five-pitch walk to Par Axelsson made it 8-3, but he recovered to get Johan Höglund. After Simon Emanuelsson and Pontus Byström singled to open the 9th, Langloys relieved and escaped the jam. His other outing, he replaced Cespedes with a 10-5 deficit in the 5th against the Netherlands. He gave up a hit to Sharlon Schoop but got Nick Urbanus to hit into a comebacker for a double play then got Randolph Oduber on a grounder. The 6th did not go as well - Hainley Statia tripled, Curt Smith singled in a run and Gianison Boekhoudt hit a two-run homer. He retired Kalian Sams then Shawn Zarraga and Yurendell de Caster both singled. He retired Schoop and Urbanus to get out of the inning, then Langloys took over in the 7th. His 12.00 ERA for the tournament was France's 3rd-highest; Thomas Meley and Yoann Vaugelade were higher. [4]
In the 2015 European Cup, he was 0-1 with a 24.75 ERA, losing to the Solingen Alligators and getting pounded in relief by T&A San Marino. His 13 runs and 11 earned runs were both second-highest in the Paris pool, with former minor leaguer Alex Lukashevich allowing more. [5] In the regular season, he slumped to 2-3, 3.04 and was not playing as much in the field (4 for 12, 2B, 3B). He switched to the Chartres French Cubs in 2016 but struggled (0-5, 10.80), allowing 37 hits in 20 innings. He was 4 for 17 at the plate. He had the highest ERA of any hurler who worked double-digit innings. [6] With another new team, the Clermont-Ferrand Arvernes, in 2017, he hit .257/.289/.286 and was 1-9 with a 6.52 ERA. He tied for the league lead in losses. [7] At age 42 that season, it may have been the end of the line.
