Biographical Information

Jonathan Mottay was born in Houston, TX to French parents. He moved with his family back to France. He was 1-0 with a 5.23 ERA for France in the 2011 European Junior Championship, beating Spain. He went 1 for 5 with a double at the plate. He participated in the 2012 MLB European Academy then joined France's senior national team for the 2012 European Championship. He pitched in two games in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) in 3 2/3 IP. He was wild, hitting three batters. He repeated at the European Academy in 2013.

In the 2014 European Championship, he was 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA in three relief outings for France. He led the team's qualifiers in ERA. He relieved Patrice Briones with a 4-3 deficit in the 6th against Great Britain and shut them out for the next four innings as France tied it. After France scored 5 in the 10th, he allowed one in the bottom of the inning to notch the win. He relieved Owen Ozanich with a 3-0 lead against Belgium in the 6th and threw a 1-2-3 inning but allowed three runs and two outs in the 7th; Dan Camou relieved (and was on the hill when two of those runs came in). He threw 3 2/3 shutout innings as a bright spot in a 10-5 loss to Spain.

In the French Division I in 2014, he was 5-3 with two saves and a 2.98 ERA for the Templiers de Sénart. He tied Brandon Barrow for 8th in strikeouts (44), was 9th in opponent average (.223), threw the 10th-most innings (54 1/3), tied for 6th in wins and tied for 3rd in saves. He attended Midland College in 2015 back in the US. During 2015, he posted a 6-5, 4.20 record with two saves for the Templiers. He was 6th with 90 IP, 5th in strikeouts (71), tied for 4th in wins and tied for 4th with 17 games pitched. He was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in the 2015 European Cup, losing to Curaçao Neptunus.

Mottay was back with Team France for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in March 2016. He replaced Ozanich in the 5th inning against host Panama with a 6-1 deficit, one on and two out but allowed a homer to Javy Guerra. He tossed a shutout 6th before Lucas Serafin relieved in the 7th. He also pitched against Panama in the semifinals. In the 5th, he relieved Antoine Villard with two outs, the bases loaded and a 4-3 deficit in the 5th. He retired Ramón Castillo to end that jam then had a 1-2-3 6th, one of the outs coming on the basepaths. With the game 4-4 going into the 7th, he retired Anthony Amaya but Jonathan Saavedra doubled and he intentionally walked Carlos Ruiz. Mottay retired Guerra on an infield fly then walked Luis Castillo to load the bags. He walked Carlos Quiroz to force in what would be the losing run before Camou relieved him.
