Biographical Information

Luis Castillo peaked at AA.

Castillo signed with the Detroit Tigers in January 2007; the scout was Ray Webster. Luis hit .232/.311/.316 for the 2007 VSL Tigers. He moved up to the DSL Tigers in 2008 and batted .245/.335/.292 with 14 steals in 20 tries. He split 2009 between the Lakeland Tigers (2 for 10) and GCL Tigers (.219/.275/.270). He led Gulf Coast League outfielders in putouts (112).

In 2010, Luis played for the GCL Tigers (.323/.343/.349 in 19 G) and Lakeland (.167/.207/.167 in 16 G). He was on the Panamanian national team in the 2010 Pan American Games Qualification Tournament, hitting .281/.378/.438 with six runs in nine games, second on the team in runs, two behind Carlos Quiroz. In 2011, he produced at a .267/.324/.350 clip for the West Michigan Whitecaps. His 14 sacrifice hits tied Anthony Phillips for third in the Midwest League. He led Tigers farmhands in that department, three ahead of Hernán Pérez. Hitting leadoff and playing center for Panama in the 2011 Baseball World Cup, he hit .205/.288/.273 with 7 runs in 11 games. He had 31 putouts, 2 assists and no errors in the outfield. His sacrifice fly off Australia's Steve Kent scored Quiroz to force extra innings one game.

Castillo split 2012 between Lakeland (.238/.306/.305 in 86 G) and West Michigan (.280/.309/.560, 12 R, 11 RBI in 12 G). His 16 sacrifice hits tied Dixon Machado for the most by a Tigers minor leaguer. He had 14 of them with Lakeland, tying Mike O'Neill for 4th in the Florida State League. He was 1 for 1 with a walk, run and a RBI off the bench in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. In '13, he batted .242/.328/.334 for the Erie SeaWolves to end his time in the Tigers chain. He had hit .246/.314/.321 with 223 runs and 180 RBI in 529 games in the minors.

In the 2013 Bolivarian Games, he excelled for the Gold Medal winners, hitting .412/.579/.643 with six runs in the seven-game event. In the Gold Medal game win over Venezuela, he went 2 for 3 with a double, two steals, a walk and two runs. He batted .235/.286/.294 in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games but drove in three in five games to place second on Panama in RBI, two behind Javier Dominguez. He was 1 for 12 in the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers but with a .333 OBP and .167 slugging. He had the lowest average of any of their regulars, but was in the middle of the pack in OPS on a light-hitting team. His lone hit was a double off Carlos Diaz of Colombia, one of three hits in a losing effort.

The Aguadulce notice was 0 for 19 with 4 walks and a run in the 2017 Bolivarian Games. In the Gold Medal game, a 6-4 loss to Colombia, he was 0 for 4.
