Carlos Diaz has pitched in the minors and for Team Colombia.
Diaz was 2-2 with a 3.31 ERA for the 2011 DSL Giants in his pro debut. In 2012, he improved to 8-2, 2.91 for the same club. He tied Felix Carvallo, Noel De La Cruz, Rafael De Paula, Angel Guerra, Ramon Sauceda and Jadison Jimenez for the Dominican Summer League lead in wins. In 2013, he came stateside and was 2-3 with a 4.99 ERA for the AZL Giants but fanned 51 in 39 2/3 IP.
With the 2014 Augusta GreenJackets, he was 6-6 with a 4.16 ERA. Splitting 2015 between Augusta (4-3, 5 Sv, 1.63, 75 K in 55 1/3 IP) and the Richmond Flying Squirrels (1 R in 2 1/3 IP), he showed good progress. In March 2016, he played for Colombia in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. In his first outing, he relieved Karl Triana with a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the 7th and a no-hitter in progress. He got two outs then served up a homer to Javy Guerra but retired four of the next five hitters (Luis Castillo doubled) before Horacio Acosta wrapped it up. In the finale, also against host Panama, he relieved Angel Vilchez in the 8th with a 1-1 tie and one out. He retired Jonathan Saavedra and Carlos Ruiz. After Dilson Herrera homered in the bottom of the 8th to put Colombia ahead, Diaz retired Guerra to open the 9th then Acosta came in and got the last two outs to send Colombia to the 2017 World Baseball Classic, their first World Baseball Classic trip; Diaz got credit for the historic win.
