Biographical Information[edit]

Kalian Sams is a minor leaguer in the Seattle Mariners system.

Sams debuted in Hoofdklasse in 2004, homering in his first at-bat for Tornado's. He hit .263/.315/.322 as a regular outfielder for the 2005 Tornado's. That year, he played in Major League Baseball's European Academy. The University of Tennessee offered him a scholarship due to his performance but he later turned it down.

Sams was signed by the Seattle Mariners in July of 2006. That season, he improved significantly in Hoofdklasse, batting .325/.425/.526 for ADO. He was 10th in the league in average, was second to Yuji Nerei in slugging and was 10th in OBP. His three home runs tied 4 others for 4th in the circuit and his three triples also tied for 4th. In the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, Sams played very well as the backup right fielder for Dirk van 't Klooster, going 3 for 5 with a triple and 4 RBI.

Sams did not have a great first year in the US minors, hitting .205/.287/.353 in 48 games for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Like fellow Dutch flyhawk Greg Halman, he was then demoted to the Everett AquaSox; unlike Halman, his play did not improve much with the demotion. He batted .225/.318/.414 in 56 games at the lower level, with 7 home runs but 72 strikeouts in 191 AB.

Sams hit .204/.295/.528 for the 2008 Pulaski Mariners with 10 homers in 32 games, but also 47 strikeouts in 108 AB. He batted only .161/.230/.339 in 16 games for the 2009 Clinton Lumber Kings and was demoted to Everett once again; he started strong there, going 6 for 16 with a double and three home runs before an injury cut his season short.
