Yoann Vaugelade

Biographical Information[edit]

Yoann Vaugelade is a French pitcher.

Vaugelade was 1 for 3 with four walks, two runs and two RBI in the 2012 European Junior Championship Qualifiers. He played for the Rouen Huskies in the French Division I in 2013. In the 2013 European Cup, he allowed one run, three hits and six walks while striking out none in 6 2/3 IP in a strong outing against heavy favorite Telemarket Rimini; he left with a 2-1 lead before Keino Perez relieved and blew it. In the regular Division I season, he topped the Templiers de Sénart in game 5 of the best-of-5 finals to lock up a championship for Rouen.

The young hurler was 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA in the 2014 European Cup. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and five walks in five innings in a loss to the Vaessen Pioniers. Facing Kotlarka Prague in his other start, he gave up 7 hits, two walks and six runs (three earned) in 5 1/3 IP. He left with a lead but Quentin Becquey gave it up; Rouen did rally to win. For the 2014 Division I season, he was 3-3 with two saves and a 4.43 ERA, tying for third in France in ERA. He made his French national team debut in the 2014 European Championship, relieving Nicolas Dubaut with a 5-2 deficit after three against Italy. He allowed four runs in two innings, three of them on a homer by former major leaguer Alex Liddi, before Thomas Meley closed out the 12-2 loss. His other outing was worse. Relieving Meley with a 4-2 deficit, two on and one out in the 7th against the Czech national team, he served up a three-run homer to Matěj Hejma followed by a solo shot to Jakub Sládek to already put the game out of reach. The 8th was worse as he gave up 7 more runs, capped by another homer, this one a two-run job by Jakub Malik.

In 2015, Vaugelade made good strides, going 6-0 with four saves and a 2.11 ERA for Rouen. He was 5th in the league in ERA (between Leonel Cespedes and Matthieu Brelle-Andrade), 3rd in opponent average (.206, behind only Jeffrey McKenzie and Owen Ozanich), tied for 4th in wins, tied for first in saves (with Meley and Pierrick Lemestre) and tied for first in games pitched (18, even with Meley and McKenzie).

Vaugelade got a critical start for France in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in March 2016, getting the call against host Panama in the semifinals. The 20-year-old blanked Panama for four innings, carrying a 3-0 lead into the 5th, against a lineup featuring major leaguer Carlos Ruiz and top prospect Javy Guerra. In the 5th, he ran into trouble, allowing one-out singles to Jorge Bishop, Isaias Velasquez and Edmundo Sosa to make it 3-1. After a walk to Anthony Amaya, he was relieved by Antoine Villard. All three inherited runners would score but he would get a no-decision as France tied it again before losing, 7-4.
