1978 Little League World Series
The 1978 Little League World Series was the 32nd Little League World Series. It featured eight teams, from Surrey, BC, Pingtung County, Santo Domingo (the first Dominican entry ever), Madrid, Danville, CA, Lexington, KY, Rockville Centre, NY and Palatine, IL. Jose Luis Pichardo of Santo Domingo no-hit Madrid on August 22. On August 26, Pingtung beat Danville in the finale, 11-1. Chao-Min Pan fanned 13 in 6 innings and drove in 3, as did RF Shi-Wen Chen. Future major leaguer Erik Johnson was the losing pitcher (10 BB, 6 R in 5 1/3 IP; 0 for 1 with the only US run). The other future big leaguer was Dave Veres, who played for the Torrejon Air Base of Madrid, Spain. He was only the second future major leaguer from a non-US team, following Hector Torres in 1958. Pingtung finished with a 0.33 ERA for the Series.
