1971 Little League World Series
The 1971 Little League World Series was the 25th Little League World Series. The eight teams playing were Brockville, ON, Tainan, Caguas, Madrid, Wahiawa, HI, Gary, IN, Lexington, KY (the first LLWS entry from Kentucky) and Augusta, ME. The big star of the Series was Lloyd McClendon, who homered in all five at-bats to set Series records for average, OBP, slugging and homers; he was walked every other time up. He was the only future major leaguer in the Series.
In the championship game, McClendon battled Tainan ace Chin-Mu Hsu to a 3-3 tie after 8 innings (a 3-run homer by McClendon accounting for all of Gary's runs), but McClendon folded in the 9th and Taiwan scored 9 times to make a deceptive 12-3 final score. McClendon wasn't the only player to have a record-setting Series; Hsu struck out a record 22 in the finale (McClendon fanned 12) and Gary catcher Ralph Basemore had 10 passed balls trying to catch McClendon (through 2011, no other player had more than 5 in a game).
