1950 Little League World Series
The 1950 Little League World Series was the 4th Little League World Series. It featured teams from Bridgeport, CT, Pensacola, FL, Kankakee, IL (the first Illinois team), Hagerstown, MD (the first team from Maryland), Punxsutawney, PA, Westerly, RI (the first entrant from Rhode Island), Clinton, SC (the most recent South Carolina team through 2013) and Houston, TX (the first Texan contestant). Houston had superb pitching, with a 0.33 ERA and .086 opponent average. Gordon Andrews of Pensacola fanned a record 21 in a 9-inning game with Kankakee; the record stood for 21 years. Billy Martin of Houston no-hit Westerly. In the finale, Houston beat Bridgeport, 2-1, as Martin tossed a one-hit, 11-strikeout gem to outduel J. Lewis (3 H, 2 R, 13 K, but 7 BB). 1B A. Mitchell, Houston's #8 batter, drove in one of their runs and scored the other.
