1979 Little League World Series

From BR Bullpen

The 1979 Little League World Series was the 33rd Little League World Series. It featured teams from Sherbrooke, QC, Pu-Tzu Town (Taiwan), Aviano, Pordenone (the first LLWS entry from Italy; representing a NATO air force base), Santurce, North Little Rock, AR, Campbell, CA, Grosse Pointe, MI and Ridgewood, NJ.

The Taiwan-Italy game featured some record performances. Italy made a record 11 errors, 5 by David Maarten, while Chao-An Chen struck out all 18 batters in a perfect game, setting the strikeout record. In the finale, Chia-Yi (0.00 ERA, .016 opponent average for the event) beat Campbell, 2-1. Campbell scored in the first but would get no hits (two walks, two errors by Taiwan) against Han-Chao Tai, who became the 5th hurler to toss a no-hitter in a LLWS championship game. Taiwan tied it off B. Fraka in the 5th on a homer by CF Chao-An Chen. In the 8th, 1B Chia-Mou Hou drove in Chang-Kuen Lu with the winner. Taiwan's #9 hitter, C Cheng-Hsien Chang, would later play in the Olympics.
