Randy Smith

Biographical Information[edit]

Randy Smith was the Scouting Director of the San Diego Padres from 1989 to 1991. He began 1993 as assistant GM of the Colorado Rockies, but returned to the Padres in June as General Manager from 1993 to 1995. When he was named, he was the youngest General manager in major league history. Shortly after being named, he was forced to put the team through a Fire Sale. He held the same post for the Detroit Tigers from 1996 to 2001. Smith returned to the Padres yet again in 2003 as a special assistant to the GM. In 2011, he was the Vice President, Player Development & International Scouting for the Padres, staying until the end of 2016.

In December 2016, he joined the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Pacific League to work as a senior adviser to General Manager Hiroshi Yoshimura and as major league scouting director.

Smith is the son of former Houston Astros and New York Yankees GM Tal Smith
