Biographical Information[edit]
Doug Bochtler was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 9th round of the [[1989 Amateur Draft[[ from Indian River State College. He played in the Expos minor league system from 1989-1992 before moving to the San Diego Padres organization via the expansion Colorado Rockies in 1993. Bochtler ascended to the major leagues in 1995 and pitched six seasons in the majors. His best season came in 1996 when he made 63 appearances with a 3.02 ERA. Bochtler's overall major league record was 9-18 with 6 saves and an ERA of 4.57. He appeared in 220 games, all in relief. Bochtler pitched for three more years in the minor leagues before retiring after the 2003 season.
After several years away from the game, Bochtler reappeared in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He was the pitching coach for the Yakima Bears in 2011-2012, the Missoula Osprey in 2013, the South Bend Silver Hawks in 2014, and the Kane County Cougars in 2015. The Padres hired Bochtler in 2015 as their bullpen coach, a role he continued through the 2019 season. The Padres replaced him in 2020 and he was slated to serve as the Fort Wayne TinCaps pitching coach before the minor leagues were shut down by COVID-19.
Bochtler moved to the Detroit Tigers organization in 2021 as the pitching coach for the Toledo Mud Hens who he helped guide to a division title that season. He remained with the Mud Hens through the 2024 season.
