Team History[edit]

The South Bend Silver Hawks began play in the Midwest League in 1988 as the South Bend White Sox. The team was renamed in 1994 to honor one of local automobile maker Studebaker's most popular cars, the Silver Hawk. Originally a Chicago White Sox farm club, they have been an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks since 1997. In 2005, the club won their first league title. After that season, the Silver Hawks were planning to relocate to Marion, IL, but they remained in South Bend, IN after the proposed sale of the team was rejected by the league. Eventually, the team was sold to a group headed by former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan, who vowed to keep the club in South Bend. After the 2014 season the team changed parent clubs to the Chicago Cubs and changed their name to the South Bend Cubs.
