Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Dan Carlson was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 33rd round of the 1989 amateur draft and played eight seasons in their organization. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 1997 expansion draft and, after one year there, he was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks and played three seasons in their system. Dan pitched 23 games in the bigs between 1996 and 1999 for the previously assembled parties. He was 1-0 with a 6.70 ERA in 47 innings.

Since his playing days ended, Carlson has been a minor league coach in the Diamondbacks organization. In 2022, he was promoted to the major league coaching staff in a dual role as Assistant Pitching Coach and Minor League Pitching Coordinator. He continued this dual role through 2024.

In 2009, the early season firing of Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin and hitting coach Rick Schu and the subsequent resignation of pitching coach Bryan Price had reverberations throughout the Diamondbacks' player development system. Carlson was originally slated to return to Yakima in 2009 but was instead promoted to the BayBears on May 19th.
