Biographical Information[edit]
Dick Scott played only 3 major league games for the Oakland Athletics in May of 1989, going 0 for 2 with 1 RBI. He played shortstop in all three games, but only for a total of 2 1/3 innings. The next year, he was a player coach for the Tacoma Tigers, beginning his coaching career. When manager Brad Fischer was away from the team in late May while his daughter was in the hospital, Scott was effectively the interim manager, along with pitching coach Chuck Estrada and A's roving coach Lenn Sakata.
He was the Arizona Diamondbacks' major league advance scout from 1998 to 2001. Scott was the Toronto Blue Jays Director of player development from 2002 to 2009. He was the Minor League Field Coordinator for the Houston Astros in 2010 and the New York Mets in 2011. In 2016, he was named the Mets' bench coach, succeeding Bob Geren and stayed until the end of the 2017 season, being let go at the same time as manager Terry Collins. He then joined the front office of the Miami Marlins as director of player development. Scott was the Mets' coordinator of coaching development and instruction in 2021-2022.
His son, Ryan Scott, was drafted in the 2008 amateur draft.
