From 1988 to 1993, South Bend's Midwest League franchise was known as the South Bend White Sox. The team was an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The name White Sox was not only used because of this, but also to incorporate the history of South Bend and it's former club, South Bend Blue Sox.

After the 1993 Season, the club changed its name from the White Sox to the South Bend Silver Hawks.
