He hit a career-best 17 homers with the Durham Bulls in 1982 before joining the Chicago White Sox organization in 1985. Overall, he played in the minors for more than a decade with a .276 batting average and 70 home runs in 779 games. He later became a minor league coach and manager. He was the minor league catching instructor for the Chicago White Sox in 1999-2005. Thompson skippered the Frederick Keys in 2007 and the beginning of 2008. He left the team for personal reasons prior to the Keys series opener against the Lynchburg Hillcats on May 16. On May 26, it was announced that Thompson was taking a leave of absence but would remain in the Orioles organization and that Richie Hebner was replacing him as the Keys' manager.
